Levels of Care

FAQ

What is CCAC/CARF accreditation and why is it important?

The Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CCAC) which was acquired by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) in 2003, is the nation’s only accrediting body for continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs).

Before CCAC/CARF was founded, consumers, financial rating agencies, and others had no clear way of determining whether a retirement community was financially stable, providing quality care, or worthy of their investment.

When the retirement community or nursing home you choose is CARF/CCAC-accredited, it means the community has passed an in-depth review of its services. It is your assurance that the community meets rigorous CARF/CCAC guidelines for service and quality—a qualified endorsement that your community conforms to nationally and internationally recognized service standards and is focused on delivering the most favorable results for you.

How do I know which level of care is appropriate for me or my loved one?

If you are new to the world of retirement communities, assisted living communities and nursing homes, the terminology can be confusing. The following definitions will be helpful. For further information, feel free to contact us.

Independent Living: As the name implies, independent living is appropriate for seniors who want to and are able to enjoy an active, independent lifestyle. Our independent living residents enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle with access to social, educational, cultural, and leisure activies. Their home may be in an apartment, villa or cottage.

Assisted Living: This level of care is appropriate for seniors who require some help with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and medication management. Our program includes a private apartment, personalized supportive services, and recreational and wellness programs designed to encourage independence. Assisted Living at both Loomis House and Loomis Village is supervised by a Registered Nurse.

Assistance with Living: Sometimes, Independent Living residents require assistance due to an illness or after surgery. All three of our communities have a qualified nursing staff who can provide that extra help, in the resident’s home. Additional charges do apply.

Skilled Nursing Care: Often referred to as a nursing home or SNF, a Skilled Nursing Facility has Registered Nurses who help provide 24-hour care to people who can no longer care for themselves due to physical, emotional, or mental conditions. Our caring staff provides assistance with activities of daily living such as: bathing, dressing, eating, grooming, getting in and out of bed, or walking around, and toileting (incontinence care). Whether care is needed on a short-term or a long-term basis, the Loomis House Nursing Center can meet your needs. Additionally, we provide specialized dementia care for those with Alzheimer’s Disease.
