Applewood residents and Hampshire College students recently participated in a photography course entitled Community, Photography, Storytelling, taught by Hampshire Assistant Professor Billie Mandle. The students and older adults worked closely photographing together and exploring photography’s ability to communicate stories. In weekly classes they participated in group conversations and critiques. They curated their photographs and narratives into a final exhibit that is being displayed at Applewood.
The resulting photos tell stories about the individuals and their shared experiences. The class comments included, this class has “helped me see my own generation from a new perspective,” and “Living, learning and exploring, this class has opened my lens to new souls and individuals.” The exhibit may be seen at Applewood, One Spencer Drive, Amherst by appointment, between June 18 and July 3, 2014. Please call 413-253-9833 to make an appointment.
