Fourth of July at Applewood

The residents and families of Applewood held their 19th Annual Fourth of July Celebration on July 4, 2014 in Amherst, Massachusetts. The morning begins with Rob, Applewood’s Administrator as Master of Ceremonies and many residents and a few employees taking part in the reenactment of key situations leading up to the revolutionary war and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

In 1995, the Applewood tenants got together and wrote a Fourth of July celebration which includes several important excerpts of the revolutionary war and the forming of the Declaration of Independence; George Washington crosses the Delaware, Paul Revere makes his midnight ride along with the reading of letters from John Adams to and from Abigail Adams. Other historic characters portrayed are Uncle Sam, John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams, Betsy Ross, Patrick Henry, Molly Pitcher, John Paul Jones, Captain Pearson and of course, the Statue of Liberty. Over the years, some segments have been added, deleted and abbreviated but the most important parts have remained intact. Everyone in attendance is encouraged to sing along to God Bless American and the Star Spangled Banner as tributes to our fine country. A Dixieland band accompanies the songs and plays while the historic characters march in. The morning culminates with a reading of the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence and a holiday luncheon buffet with tasty morsels, the folks of that time, might have enjoyed.

Two current residents, who were among the original occupants of Applewood 23 years ago, still enjoy taking part in this celebration and were the initial costume designers and inspiration for this wonderful remembrance of how the United States of American came to be and the freedoms, we as Americans, now hold dear.
