Hospitality of Applewood Resident

Sandi is a resident who has lived at Applewood for about 2.5 years. In that time, she has hosted many, drop in and socialize events. Most recently, she opened her home to all of the Applewood staff and residents for coffee, tea and blueberry muffins. She coordinated the event and then recruited a couple of other residents, Jill and Susan to assist with the baking and preparation.

Sandi got the idea when she went to a local farm and picked several baskets of blueberries. When she returned, she phoned her friends and asked them for their opinion about hosting a gathering that would be open to everyone who lives and works at Applewood. Once the blueberries were cleaned and sorted they baked seven dozen muffins. Gluten free muffins were prepared as well, because the women are aware of their friends’ allergies and wanted to include everyone.

On July 14th from 8: 00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M., the meet and greet was on and most of the residents dropped by and fifteen staff members, including the executive chefs and the Director of Dining Services. The culinary team was impressed with the ladies baking skills and everyone had a marvelous time. It was great to see how well the residents and staff get along and can mingle and chat effortlessly.

When the gathering was over, there were 3 ½ dozen muffins left over , so the ladies donated them to the Amherst Survival Center, which is a not-for-profit entity that caters to the homeless and low-income residents of Amherst, Massachusetts.
