On Thursday October 27, 2016, a cooking competition modeled after Iron Chef was held at Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing. All the chefs of our four communities, Applewood, Loomis House, Loomis Village and ofcourse our Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing chef competed against each other in this fun for all.
Residents of all communities came and local experts got to taste and judge, not only based on flavor, but also display.
- Adam Byrd of Applewood in Amherst
- Joe Woznicki of Loomis House in Holyoke
- Dave Stycharz of Loomis Village in South Hadley
- Brian Gouvkin of Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing in Springfield
- Wayne Hooker, owner of Chef Wayne's Big Mamou restaurant in Springfield
- Thomas Pietroski, Sodexo general manager of McLean Healthcare in Simsbury, Connecticut
- Jesse Meyers, Sodexo multiservice general manager of Mercy Healthcare in West Hartford, Connecticut
Each competitor was given the same secret ingredients — sweet potatoes and apples — and asked to prepare an appetizer for the judges, much like the Iron Chef competition.
Sodexo provides all the food services for the four Loomis Communities and our competition proved to be fun and an excellent showcase of the incredible talent our chefs have. The Applewood team was declared the winner with their pan-seared jumbo scallop dish. Chef Byrd said that he was honored to win the inaugural competition.

"Pretty much you work every day hard in the kitchen for things like this," said Byrd. "It starts at home and it starts at work. To see the passion, exude and to present to a crowd like this, that's what you work hard for and have that pride and passion for food."
According to Byrd, there are misconceptions about retirement homes being bland, not so at our communities! He, and all other chefs take pride in taking food and adding a unique twist to it in the kitchen.
