New Year’s Eve at Applewood

Applewood traditionally starts celebrating New Year’s Eve with decorating the Tavern with lights, garlands and other New Year’s Eve type decorations to make everything ready for the New Year. Anybody who wishes to join in can and this is a fun event for both staff and residents.

All residents then enjoy a special holiday dinner in the Dining Room, which is served between 5-7 p.m.   The meal choices were Cream of Tomato or Chicken Noodle Soup, Spanakopita, Beef Short Ribs (braised slowly with red wine), Poached Salmon (served with lemon dill sauce) or Cheese Stuffed Shells with homemade marina.

This 2013 to 2014 New Year’s Eve, dinner was followed by the movie, “The King and I, which we watched in the meeting room. Not just any version, but the 1956 version with Yul Brenner and Debra Kerr which is a resident favorite.

Afterwards we watched New Year’s celebrations from around the world on TV and toasted with sparkling cider and donut holes, a tradition that has been upheld for 22 years.

As we closed in on the midnight hour, we dawned our New Year’s crowns and party hats. This year we had 54 residents participate, which is more than half the population, ranging in age from 70-95! We are never too old to ring in the New Year in style!

After we decked ourselves out for the midnight party we moved to the Tavern for appetizers and champagne. There the Applewood Chimers ring out peals and at midnight we all raised our glasses to ring in the New Year and toasted to a great 2014, filled with Health, Happiness and Prosperity for all.

Our party wrapped up around 1 a.m. at which time we all went to bed.
