Springfield Visionaries to be Honored

Twenty years ago, Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing opened its doors to older adults. That promising beginning was the result of a vision shared by leaders from Baystate Health and Springfield College who were intent on building a first-of-its-kind retirement community in Springfield. They assembled a group of leaders who planned and built a community that uniquely hosts independent living, assisted living and a skilled nursing center all under the same roof on a wooded lakeside campus.

On May 21, The Loomis Communities will honor the founding Board of Directors of Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing with the Elvira Whiting Ball Award. The award is presented annually to an individual or group for outstanding service to older adults who personify the spirit of Loomis’ founding leader, Elvira Whiting Ball. There is no better way to honor the founders of Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing than with an award named after another visionary leader, Elvira Whiting Ball.

Elvira Whiting Ball the founding leader of The Loomis Communities who, over 100 years ago, with a group of Holyoke women decided to provide older adults a place to live “exempt from strife.” When there was no Social Security or long-term care insurance, they raised funds for construction of a home for older adults who could not afford private care. In the fall of 1911, the first residents moved to the home on Loomis Avenue in Holyoke, beautiful within and out, dedicated to their comfort and happiness.

The Elvira Whiting Ball Award is presented to an individual or group that has advanced the mission of The Loomis Communities and personifies the spirit of our founder.

Please join us at Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing on Thursday, May 21, at 4:30 p.m. to celebrate the community’s two decades of service to older adults and to honor these leaders, their vision and the vibrant retirement community they created. $35 per person reservation benefits The Loomis Communities Nursing Centers at Loomis House and Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing.
