Beautiful Ponds!

A group of Loomis Village Residents approached our Chief Executive Officer, Carol Katz, with their concerns about invasive species that were encroaching upon two ponds on the grounds. The Board of Directors agreed that these ponds are a lovely part of the grounds that were enjoyed by many and should be restored. They voted money for the wetlands permitting process and design work by Tighe and Bond. The Loomis Village residents raised $39,000 to do the work. As a result, Pond #1 is nearly complete, skunk cabbage and wetland grasses are returning. As spring continues we will begin to see the planted "conservation mix" grasses and wild blueberry bushes. Remaining work includes clearing some of the mulch on the eastern bank, trimming the tree and placing stone resting places for turtles and birds. Plans are being developed for an accessible patio area on the west side of the pond for all who would like to relax and enjoy the view. Thanks especially to Ann Klein and Elwin Sanborn for their generous gifts!

Clearing on Pond #2 was done last winter and reports are that a blue heron stopped by to visit! Remaining work includes planting the "conservation mix" grasses, blueberry bushes and placing the stone and log resting places. Because the landscape is hilly and the wetland stream is so nearby, the walkway will always be a bit more challenging to access. Plans are being developed to improve the walkway from Worthington Drive and place benches and a few trees to make this too, a restful stopping place.  Thanks especially to our friend Jack Clark for his generous bequest that will, in part, support this work!

Final fundraising goals for the remaining work will be determined once estimates are in. For more information, please contact Carol Constant, 552-1505 x184, cconstant@loomiscommunities.org.
