Giving Back to our Community
December 31, 2009
Greetings from the Community Outreach Committee…
This year has been exciting and busy for the Community Outreach Committee (COC). As you know, the Loomis Communities is a Not-for-Profit 501c(3) organization. As such, our mission is to enrich the lives of older adults living in our communities. We are also committed to being an integral part of life in the communities in which we live. This year we are grateful and happy to report our success in supporting other non-profit organizations in the Pioneer Valley and beyond. The following are the programs and organizations we supported:
- A Valentine’s Cookie Sale was held at Applewood, Loomis House and Loomis Village. The proceeds from this sale together with a Loomis Match and food drive raised $2,089.00 to benefit the Amherst Survival Center and Kate’s Kitchen in Holyoke.
- The Daffodil sale at Applewood, Loomis House and Loomis Village raised $1,295.00 to benefit the American Cancer Society.
- Contributions of $5,979.00 was raised for the Memory Walk to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. In addition, the Loomis communities donated $748.00 in materials to bake 190 dozen blueberry muffins that were sold at Applewood, Loomis House, Loomis Village and, our newest member, Reeds Landing.
- Twelve residents and staff members sold $884.00 in products to support Brightside for Children and Families on December 9th at the Holyoke Mall.
- Twenty five residents and staff members wrapped packages totaling $470.00 in support Hospice Life Care and VNA of Holyoke on December 16th at the Holyoke Mall.
- Loomis Communities contributed $1000.00 to the Valley Opportunity Council for Fuel Assistance and $211 to the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts.
- Clothing drives were held at Applewood, Loomis House and Reeds Landing.
- The COC organized 14 talks open to residents and the public on a wide array of topics of interest to older adults from physical wellness and financial strategies to grieving and sexuality.
- Four blood drives supported the American Red Cross, Mercy Hospital and Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
- Two volunteer days benefited St. Jude’s used furniture sales and Fisher Home for Hospice.
- Ninety six lids for Yoplait’s Save Lids to Save Lives program were turned in.
In all $12,676 in cash and hundreds of countless volunteer hours of Loomis Communities’ staff and residents were contributed to other non-profit organizations in the greater Pioneer Valley and beyond. Thank you to all who supported these efforts with your donations and time! We on the COC are looking forward to 2010!
