Applewood has a rich history of residents learning in retirement. This began when Applewood opened its doors in 1991. A committee of tenants began obtaining speakers from the colleges, community and residents with expertise from their career or their travels around the world.
The committee is now made up of a few gentlemen who secure Saturday morning speakers with a mix of residents and outside presenters from the greater community and a group of women who coordinate a Tuesday evening lecture series, on topics that are requested by their peers, which are posted in the events section of this website.
Each year the committees change due to new residents joining and seasoned residents wanting a break from committee work. But, the amazing factor here is that the programs are always stimulating and well attended no matter who is in charge or who the lecturer is.
Aside from Applewood’s learning programs many of the residents of our community are members of Learning in Retirement (LIR) which is an organization created by a collaboration of the five colleges; Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke, Smith and the University of Massachusetts. They must pay a fee to join, but once a member; folks have access to 88 classes a semester throughout the Pioneer Valley, the libraries at the colleges, and have the ability to audit classes at the various colleges with the teaching professor’s permission.
Since so many Applewood residents participate in LIR, we have three classes a semester in our meeting room so that residents, who no longer can or want to drive into town, can learn in their home. Many of the moderators’ teaching the courses request the Applewood venue, but unfortunately we cannot accommodate all who want to have a class in our community because of the many enriched activities always going on at Applewood. Below is a photo of one of those learning in retirement courses on Daniel Deronda moderated by an Applewood resident.
