Amherst – On Thursday, November 9, 2017 from 3:30 – 5:00 P.M., Applewood, One Spencer Drive, Amherst will hold an opening reception for an Exhibit by Jack Medoff of Drawings, Illustrations, Cartoons and Puntoons.The exhibit is free and open to the public and will run through February 11, 2018.
Jack grew up in the Bronx in the 40s and 50s.He started to draw as a little boy, and has never stopped.His father used to give him paper to draw on.He would scribble happily day after day.Jack used to draw baseball players, cartoon characters and anything that interested him.
After high school, Jack enrolled at The Parsons School of Design and New York University, a joint program through which he earned a BFA.He was especially drawn to graphic design and advertising.When he graduated, he decided to work as an ad agency art director.He was hired by Doyle Dane Bernbach, the New York ad agency that was revolutionizing the industry with their creative work.
Jack’s career was in advertising.Over the years, he directed TV commercials and ad campaigns for some of the top agencies including Wells Rich Greene, Dancer Fitzgerald and Grey Advertising. He occasionally had the opportunity to use his own illustrations in some of the ads.
He freelanced as a cartoonist and illustrator for such publications as Playboy, The New Yorker, The National Lampoon and The New York Times.
Jack also illustrated a number of books including several children’s books for Scholastic Publishing.He greatly enjoyed combining puns with drawings, which he calls Puntoons.Jack has been selling these drawings at The Square Circle Gallery in Rockport, MA for over 20 years.
