Two special upcoming events at Loomis Village in March
March 12, 3pm - Matthew McKeever, PhD. Mount Holyoke College Professor of Sociology will give a talk entitled “Immigration Reform and the Economic Impact legalization of 11 million unauthorized immigrants would have in the United States”. Discussions and questions are welcome after his talk. Matthew McKeever’s work focuses on issues of social and economic inequality. He studies these in international comparative perspective, with a primary focus on the countries of southern Africa. He has also studied economic inequality in the U.S., including the economic consequences of family structure. His research has appeared in Social Forces, Sociology of Education, Demography and other journals. He is also a contributor to Governing American Cities: Inter-Ethnic Coalitions, Competition, and Conflict (Russell Sage Press, 2001) and Fragile Families and the Marriage Agenda (Kluwer, 2005).
March 24, 3 pm – A one woman production entitled Meet Eleanor Roosevelt: Wife, Mother, and First Lady will be presented by actor Elena Dodd. The production has previously been presented for the Northeast Regional Conference on Social Studies, League of Women Voters, United Nations Association, U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women in China, and well as at Mrs. Roosevelt’s Val-Kill home, Hyde Park, N.Y. Elena Dodd’s previous roles as historical characters include abolitionist Sarah Grimké at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Harriet Beecher Stowe at the John F. Kennedy Library, Boston, and at the Stowe House, Hartford. An actress and writer with The Streetfeet Women of Boston, she cofounded Streetfeet Workshops with Angela Cook in 1975.
