Springfield – This past Tuesday, September 24, over 80 undergraduate students from Springfield College boarded buses with gloves, racks, and clippers and spent the morning working on landscaping projects at Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing. They were joined by graduate students, coaches, and Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing residents to trim overgrown weeds, vines and spread mulch around the cottages, walkways, roadways, and sidewalks. After two short hours of work, conversations, and laughter, the grounds at the retirement community were trimmed, neat and ready to be enjoyed in the coming fall weather.
The project at Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing was just one project of Humanics in Action Day an annual Springfield College event in celebration of community and civic engagement. Each year, about 2,000 students, faculty members, staff members, and alumni fan out across the city of Springfield during a day to read to youngsters, clean up vacant lots, repair sidewalks, and generally make connections with the community.
